Lil’ Lacy Leggings

Spring is here at last! Which means it’s time for cute little dresses and skirts and tunics and all things girly:) But…there is still a bit of chill in the air so cute little leggings are essential

I found a darling pair at Baby Gap but even on sale they’re $13 which is just a bit too much for something I could easily make with things in my stash.  They just look so darling on little legs!

Oh yeah… she’s rocking the look:)

Turns out they also protect little knees…

Oops! Guess I should’ve been ready to catch this child instead of standing at the bottom with my camera. I swear she normally is just fine going down by herself- maybe the skirt is extra slippery??? Don’t worry a quick kiss and she was back up at the top ready to give it another go
Want to make your own pair? Or maybe 3 or 4 pairs???
Materials:
  • Knit Fabric: Something nice and stretchy and comfortable. An old adult t-shirt works great
  • Lace Detail: I used decorative elastic from The Fabric Fairy. It’s only $0.39/yard and looks fantastic! Wish I’d ordered more than 1 yard- I love this stuff:)
  • Elastic for the waistband
1. Fold a pair of leggings that fit well in half and lay the straight edge on the fold of your fabric. Cut around the edge leaving room at the top for the waistband (I left an extra 1″) and a seam allowance along the crotch and inseam. You need 2 pieces.
2. Add the decorative elastic to the bottom edge of each pant leg. Since knits don’t fray I just sewed the pant leg right on top of the elastic portion of my trim using a double needle.
3. With right sides together sew up the inseam of each pant leg
**Tip: use a serger or a narrow zig-zag stitch so your seam has some stretch to it
4. With right sides together slide the 2 legs inside each other and sew together along the crotch
5. Sew the ends of your elastic together to form a loop (mine was about 2″ smaller than little miss’ waist measurement). Wrap the top edge of the leggings over the elastic so the elastic is on the inside of the leggings and the top edge of the leggings is flush with the bottom edge of the elastic.
Sew in place from the right side of the leggings using a double needle so you have a nice finish on the outside and the zig-zag on the inside. If you don’t have a double needle just use a regular zig-zag stitch.
Happy Sewing!
